We passed an important deadline this week for our students. The Scholarship Application for Current Undergraduate Students was due Feb. 1. We know how very important these awards are to our students.
Our application review process is a major enterprise, in part because we have so many talented students apply. Our process is clearly laid out on our scholarship page, which is also where we’ve included helpful information to guide students through the process and explain the many awards we have available. They range from scholarships recognizing public service, to those for students in particular disciplines like geography, math, science and the humanities, just to name a few. Our newest scholarships were added two years ago. One is the Dean’s Experiential Learning Scholarship to assist upperclassmen in pursuing a learning experience away from the UNL campus setting. The other is for a scholarship of up to $2,000 and selection into the Dean’s Scholars Society . It’s very hard to select recipients because these are truly the best students in the whole College.
For me, participating in the review process is a great opportunity to learn about the exciting things our students are pursuing both in and outside the classroom. While it’s rewarding to notify the students who win one of these awards, it’s quite difficult to turn down others. Unfortunately, we only have so much scholarship money to distribute.
We’re privileged to be able to offer such financial assistance because of many generous donors, including many who relied on scholarships to complete their own education. They see it as giving back for the great education they received and they’re very passionate about it.
