The spring semester is winding down and some students have already finished their last final exam and are packing up to leave campus for the summer. Although the sidewalks and hallways across campus may not be as crowded in coming months, scholarly activity is not going on hiatus.
Almost all faculty in the college are on 9-month contract, yet they will continue to work during the summer. For many, the next few months will be prime time to pursue research and other projects. They’ll keep busy writing articles and books and working in their labs. Some also may spend the summer months working on developing curriculum for new courses.
Summer is a time when they can concentrate on their research without other distractions. During the school year it’s very difficult to get uninterrupted blocks of time to work on something. It’s a time to think about things more clearly, more deeply and for longer periods.
It’s the same thing up in the dean’s office. We’ll be talking about implementation of our strategic plan and long-range budget forecasting. We’ll review departments’ proposals for new hires and decide how many we can reasonably afford to hire.
Of course, summer also is about spending time with family, enjoying the outdoors and traveling, whether for fun or for work.
In this weather, I’ll be out bike riding a lot. I also will be headed to Turkey, Colorado, and Michigan for vacations as well as traveling to China and various spots around the United States for work.
Best wishes for the summer!
