Graduation is my favorite event of the year. Students and their families are very happy, especially since the students get their actual diplomas. Indeed my nephew who graduated from Michigan State on Saturday tweeted about the fake diploma he got. He was quite impressed when I tweeted back that we hand out real diplomas.
Now that I have been at UNL for almost three years I know more and more of the students. Some of my favorites I saw graduate Saturday were
- A recent immigrant from Sudan got a BA in History at the age of 64.
- A former president of the Arts and Sciences Student Advisory Board.
- A son of one of my department chairs.
- The guy who takes my coffee order every Sunday morning at the Meadowlark Coffee Shop.
Every graduate has a story and these are just four of them. We at UNL have enriched their lives and, something that cannot be overemphasized, they have enriched ours.
